FTO Selection Questions Using Emotional Intelligence Elements

 

  • You have a trainee who has generally been doing well.  They have two ”bad” days in a row, which is out of character.  How would handle this and why?

  • Your trainee lacks social skills and has a difficult time with certain people.  What steps can you use to address and improve this issue?

  • Describe a time in the field when someone was rude and verbally abusive to you.  What did you do to deescalate and obtain your goal?

  • You make a traffic stop at 0200 hours.  The vehicle is occupied by a female driver and an infant in the back seat.  The driver speaks minimal English but states she does not have a driver’s license.  How would you handle this?

  • Tell us a time in which you showed empathy to a community member.

  • You are detailed to death investigation involving a 91 year old woman who has died of cancer.  Her family is there.  What steps would you take to conduct the investigation and handle the call?  What are some considerations?

  • What mental health training have you attended?  If you have applied it, tell us about it.

  • Your trainee arrives for his fourth shift with you.  He seems quiet and reveals that his father unexpectedly passed away.  How do you proceed?

  • You are on patrol and see a vehicle exceeding the speed limit by 10 mph.  You stop the vehicle and make contact with the driver who advises you that her infant son is having a medical emergency.  How would you handle the stop and why?

  • Explain why emotional intelligence is an important attribute for a peace officer to possess.  How would you rate your EQ?

  • You are on patrol and notice a vehicle fail to stop at a stop sign.  You pull the vehicle over and find the driver unlicensed.  Driver explains that he has been saving money to get a license and buy insurance.  Driver adds that he only drives to work to make ends meet.  What do you do?  Driver says he cannot pay a moving violation.

  • You go to a loud party call.  Family members advise that it is a graduation party and they paid a lot of money to throw it and that it is a police academy party.  You have many complaints about the party.  What do you do?

  • What do you consider your greatest strength?  Weakness?  Would you co-workers agree?

  • Describe a significant accomplishment, personal or professional.  Describe the measurable goals.

  • Describe a weakness about your job performance.  Have you devised a plan to address it?  If so, describe it.

  • During a traffic stop your trainee identifies a reason to store the vehicle.  The driver, an elderly person, lives outside the jurisdiction and has no way to get home.  Identify training elements of this incident.

  • Describe a time you responded to a call with a new officer off of probation and he did not know how to handle the call.  What would you do and why?

  • Tell us about a time you failed at something.  How did you handle it?

  • What would your co-workers say is the best thing about working with you?

  • How do you handle conflict with a co-worker?

  • Tell us about a task you took on but did not have to do?  Why did you do it?

  • Today your trainee seems to be off and snaps back at you at one of your critiques.  You are aware he is going through a divorce.  How do you handle this?

  • A neighborhood in your beat is experiencing a sharp rise in burglaries.  You have been assigned to attend a neighborhood meeting to address angry residents. 
    Give us a short presentation representing what you would say.

  • What is your goal as an FTO?

  • Tell us about a goal you accomplished in the last couple of years that helped your teaching skills.

  • Tell us about a time where you had to measure the letter of the law versus the spirit of the law and how you resolved the issue.

  • Tell us about your “career defining case” up to this time.  Why did you pick this case?

  • Why do you want to be an FTO?

  • You have been chosen to handle a recruit in an extension phase.  She is failing due to poor communication skills.  Describe your approach and what techniques you might apply to train this recruit.

  • What would you change about the FTO program?

  • Tell us about a call you handled where empathy was the main issue as opposed to enforcement.

  • How would you handle another FTO who is treating a recruit unfairly and it is obvious to other trainees.

  • How would you handle a trainee who is having a problem with self-initiated activity?
